The original masterpiece currently resides in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Completed in 1634 by the Spanish painter, Jusepe De Ribera, St. Bartholomew is depicted on the right side with one hand bound to a cross looking up into the heavens. The executioner stands on the left with his blade and sharpener symbolically forming a cross preparing to flay St. Bartholomew alive. The man in the back in red is assumed to be the patron of the work and the being of death stands behind the executioner.
